About the client
Sage Hill Ranch is an Escondido-based family farm focusing on low-impact practices and growing high-quality vegetables while prioritizing soil health and environmental stewardship. By transforming difficult land into productive fields, they’ve created a system that works with nature rather than against it. Their use of no-till farming, tree crops, and hedgerows not only improves the land’s fertility but also supports local wildlife and reduces their carbon footprint.
Design challenge
Sage Hill holds monthly culinary events on their patio overlooking the farm and produce packing building. They wanted to elevate the diners' experience by beautifying the packing building. I was given access to Lauren di Matteo's photography archive containing artistic documentation of the life and work at Sage.
Solution
I selected three of Lauren's images for reference - a closeup of a blueberry bush, cherry tomatoes, and a worker at Sage spreading compost in the field. The fruit and veg images bring up thoughts of organic culinary experiences, wile the farmer is a reminder of the connection between us and the land.
