Space Vents

Sofia University's Department of Physics invited us to paint a mural for them. Their campus includes large experimental facilities which require steady ventilation. The campus is surrounded by vent clusters designed in a brutalist stile. We worked with Professor Stoil Ivanov, who guided us thematically.

We were asked to visualize some of the discoveries made on campus. But how does an artist select and wrap his head around the complicated field of physics? And then, how does one translate said discoveries as visuals, especially on geometric, 3D structures?

We selected the discovery of the X-Boson, exoplanet spectrography, carbon nanostructures, and black hole photography as the topics. We used color and line as unifying design elements to create continuity across the vents. We unutilized stencils to achieve a clean, scientific look.
